Sheina Gram - Fragments of a Diary

Из The holocaust in Latgale

TRANSLATIONS:

From The holocaust in Latgale

In Vishki before the war lived 423 Jews (56.4% of the population).  As Mr Barshchevski recalls, he envied the Jews because they understood very well the speech of the German tankers who crossed through Vishki.  However several days later special German operation groups appeared and the Jews were taken into the fire station, where a prison was organized.  F. Lovshinovskaya recalls the coming of the members of the punitive expedition and said, "Felicia, remove the cow, they will bring the Jews here".  "And what will happen to them?" the girl said.  "They will tell us what to do with them.", was his answer.  Soon the Jews were herded in.  All was ready for the action, but a few minutes before, a motor vehicle appeared and a German officer ordered them to cancel the shooting.  The Jews were allowed to return home, retrieve their treasures and prepare for evacuation to the Daugavpils ghetto.  V. Galvane noticed that a local policeman forced the Jews to dig their graves.  It was a very warm day and they wanted to drink but they were not allowed to be absent more than one minute.  In spite of this a Jew threw down his shovel, approached the lake, removed his boots and started to drink.  When the grave was finished he laid in it.  The murderers started to shoot but he was only wounded.  "Kill, don't torment", the man yelled.  The second shot took the life off the martyr.

Vishki was the last place for the Jews of Dagda who were chased from around Aglona. By the column, gypsies were walking around trying to steal things from the unhappy Jews.  One gypsy took the raincoat of a Jew, saying that he will not have need of it anymore.  Another Jew yelled, "Shoot on the spot, I shall not go further".  The request was immediately executed.  Tired Jews were herded to the side of Kalnavishek.  The Jews lay down for a while to rest, some dozed off.  And suddenly the machine guns tore the morning silence.  The bloody slaughter lasted two hours.

Tiré de The holocaust in Latgale
