-It says Berl the son of Nachman UZDIN. In typical communist style the
Hebrew word Nachman is written as if it were a Yiddish word, Nachmen (using
the Hebrew spelling was thought to encourage Zionism).

They also used the wrong "N" (should be a final "N") at the end of the name
UZDIN.

There is also an inconsistency between the Hebrew and the Russian. The
Russian indicates that his father's name was Nachum, not Nachman, two
completely different names.

In short the inscription reflects the sad state of Judaism in Soviet Latvia
of 1964.

I have no idea what the second line is all about -- it might be an acronym; it's not a date, and not the "standard" 5-letter acronym for "may his soul be bound up for life eternal" which one sees most of the time.

The fourth line is in Russian, "Uzdin"


The first two lines are in Hebrew; as far as I know, they would read the
same in Yiddish. However, I find it interesting that the final nun "N" in
"Nachmen" is written in the final form (long nun) and in "Uzdin" it is not.
I don't know if there is some specific reason for this.

It is interesting but not surprising that the communist mandated Yiddish
spelling is used – for Nachman and also for the family name. The communists
eliminated the use of the final form of letters and that is shown with the
last name, but it looks like Nachman got through the inspector since its
last
letter is the final nun.

-The Hebrew reads "Beryl son of Nachman" on the first line and "Usdin" on
the second line.
What I found odd/interesting is the Hebrew spelling: the last letter on
the first line (on the far left) is a "nun sofeet", the form of the
letter nun when it appears at the end of a word. This same letter
should appear on the end of the name Usdin - but doesn't: it's an
ordinary nun.

My Cyrillic is not great but I think it repeats: Boris Nachmovich Usdin.

The next questions are: Is there a relationship between the names
Nachman and Itsik?
That plus the different birth dates raises the question: Is this the
right Boris Usdin?

I don't know Hebrew, but I can see that the
last two words in the top line are "ben Nachman"
(apparently Naum's Hebrew name).

The first word is apparently some sort of Hebrew
cognate of Boris. It appears to be Berl, or something
like that.

I believe that the first line reads: Beryl ben (son of) Nachman. Nachman is Hebrew for the prophet Nathan and means comforter. The second line is in Hebrew which I am very poor with. Hopefully, someone else will inform you. John



Yiddish is spelled phonetically and before 1936 did not have a standard
spelling - everybody spelled it the way they heard it. Zalman would probably
be spelled: zayin aleph lamed mem ayin nun-sofit.
Eliokim is the Yiddish pronunciation of a Hebrew name and is spelled as in
Hebrew: aleph lamed yud kuf yud mem-sofit.
Usdin would probably be spelled: aleph vov samekh daled yud nun-sofit
(assuming the "s" before "d" in Usdin is pronounced "s" and not "z" as it
would be in English. If it is pronounced "z" - then change the samekh to
zayin).
