USDIN AND ALTERMAN FAMILIES

The records of the 1st All Russian census for 1897 contain the information about the following families with the surname Usdin:

*Nachman, son of Jankel Usdin, aged 40, born in Vishki, place of registration – Vishki, literate, occupation – shop-keeper,
his wife Sora-Pescha Usdin, daughter of Mowscha (maiden name is not stated), aged 38, born in Dvinsk, literate,
-Awsey, son of Nachman Usdin, aged 18, born in Vishki, literate, occupation – tailor,
-Itzik, son of Nachman Usdin, aged 15, born in Vishki, literate,
-Ruvin, son of Nachman Usdin, aged 11, born in Vishki, literate,
-Berka, son of Nachman Usdin, aged 6, born in Vishki,
-Haika, daughter of Nachman Usdin, aged 1, born in Vishki,
-Esther daughter of Nachman Usdin, aged 3, born in Vishki.
They lived in Vishki at Petersburgskaya Street, in the house of Moll, apt. 1.
The age is stated approximately for 1896.

 

*Schlioma, son of Leiba Usdin, aged 58, born in Vishki, place of registration – Vishki, literate, occupation – tailor,
his wife Haja-Sora Usdin, daughter of David (maiden name is not stated), aged 36, born in Utyani, Kovno province (now Lithuania), literate,
-Israil-David, son of Schlioma Usdin, aged 16, born in Vishki, literate, occupation – tailor’s apprentice,
-Ita-Leika, daughter of Schlioma Usdin, aged 8, born in Vishki, unliterate,
-Etka-Rivka, daughter of Schlioma Usdin, aged 3, born in Vishki.
They lived in Vishki at Petersburgskaya Street, in the house of Usdin.

 

*Elka, daughter of Hirsch Usdin, aged 13, born in Yurino village, Kreslava civil parish, Dvinsk district, place of registration – Vishki, her occupation – nanny. She was a niece of Mowscha, son of David Gram, aged 31, and lived together with their family in Vishki at Petersburgskaya Street, in the house of Gram.

 

 

*Kadesch (Kodesch), son of Leiba Usdin, aged 55, born in Vishki, place of registration – Vishki, literate, occupation – trader, pedlar,
his wife Rocha, daughter of Hirsch (maiden name is not stated), aged 40, born in Vitebsk, literate.
They lived in Vishki at Petersburgskaya Street, in the house of Usdin, apt. 1.

 

*Doba, daughter of Kodes Usdin, aged 22, born in Vishki, place of registration – Vishk, her occupation – workwoman, she lived together with the family of Haim-David, son of Salman Schepschelewitsch, aged 40, in Vishki at Petersburgskaya Street, in the house of Schepschelewitsch, and worked in his shop.


 

The following persons were registered as living in Vishki at Aglonas Street 64:
*Berka Usdin, born in 1888 in Vishki (we suppose he was son of Nachman Usdin),
his wife Ginda Usdin(maiden name Notkina)(Genya), born in 1895 in Vishki,(killed in holocaust)
their chidlren:
-daughter Mirjam Usdin, born in 1924 in Vishki,(killed in holocaust)
-son Nachman Usdin, born in 1926 in Vishki,(killed in holocaust)
-daughter Sara Usdin, born in 1932 in Vishki.
(killed in holocaust)

-Khaya-Bella,born in 1925(killed in holocaust)
Berka was son of Nachman Usdin.

 

The following persons were registered as living in Vishki at Aglonas Street (number not stated):
- Itzik Usdin, born in 1881 in Vishki (He was son of Nachman Usdin),
- his wife Ida Usdin, born in 1886 in Vishki.
According to the records of the Soviet Extraordinary commission for 1945 Itzik and Ida were killed in 1941 by Nazis.

 

*a widow Haja-Merka Usdin, born on March 15 of 1887 in Vishki (her husband Israel-David Usdin). She was a daughter of Itzik Golansky (Golandsky) and his wife Hana.

her children:
daughter Schula Usdin, born on November 20 of 1910 in Vishki. 1937 she married to Leib-Wulf, son of Schender Dumesch, born on April 30 of 1899 in Vishki. He was a teacher.

Schula married to Usdin Leib-Wulf, son of Schender Dumesch had at least two daughters:
-Jeva Dumesch, born on February 10 of 1938 in Daugavpils,
-Nechamia Dumesch, born on April 18 of 1939 in Vishki.
Before the Second World War they lived in Riga at Jumaras Street 18, apt. 6. They were struck off the house register on October 7 of 1941 as moved Ludza Street 11, apt. 10 (territory of Riga ghetto during Nazi occupation). Leib-Wulf Dumesch was still alive on July 7 of 1942 when he was registered in the lists of Jews which were forced to work at Missa Torfwerk, his address in ghetto that time – Vilanu Street 16-2.

 

*son Schliom Usdin, born on July 3 of 1912 in Vishki. On November 21 of 1937 in Riga he married to Sara Matjukov, born on August 26 of 1914 in Dvinsk. They had one daughter Zhenny Usdin, born on May 29 of 1939 in Riga. Before the Second World War they lived in Riga at Lacplesa Street 56, apt. 29. There is a note in the house register dated October 6 of 1941 that they moved to Katolu Street 7, apt. 64 (territory of Riga ghetto during Nazi occupation). Schliom was registered in the lists of Jews which were forced to work at Missa Torfwerk, at Aizpute Torfwerk in 1942–1943. Schliom was still alive in October 18 of 1943.

His wife Sara Usdin,born Matjukov and her daughter Zhenny were killed by the nazis in 1941

 

*son Leib Usdin, born on May 30 of 1914 in Vishki. His wife Debora, daughter of Hirsch Lewinstein, born on November 13 of 1915 in Libau (now Liepaja). Before the Second World War he lived in Riga at Gogola Street 8/10, apt. 20. Leib’s occupation – shopkeeper. The house register contain no information about the fate of Debora. Leib was struck off the house register on October 28 of 1941, not stated where, obviously to ghetto. Leib together with his brother Schliom worked at Aizpute Torfwerk and was still alive in October of 1943. The book „Kniga spaseniya” of Leonid Koval (2. vol., page 64) contain information that brothers Usdin working at Aizpute Torfwerk escaped in 1943, they have hidden but were arrested and killed.

Debora was evacuated to Kazakhstan(Andijanskaya district) in 1941/1942.I guess she survived.

-daughter Lubov Usdin, born on July 2 of 1916 in Vishki. Since 1935 she lived in Riga at Gogola Street 8/10, apt. 20, since December of 1937 – at Lacplesa Street 56, apt. 28 together with the family of brother Schliom Usdin. On January 18 of 1940 in Riga she married to David Gild, born on January 12 of 1909 in Dvinsk. Their last known address – Riga, Gogola Street 8/10, apt. 20. David was struck off the house register on April 25 of 1941 as moved to Liepaja. Lubov was struck off the house register on October 27 of 1941, not stated where, obviously to ghetto.

-twin-daughters Musja Usdin, born on March 15 of 1918 in Vishki. Since March 8 of 1941 Musja lived in Riga at Gogola Street 8/10, apt.20 (previous address – Vishki, Aglonas Street 34). There is a note in the house register dated October 25 of 1941 that she moved to L.Kalnu Street 12, apt. 4 (territory of Riga ghetto during Nazi occupation).


-daughter Pera Usdin, born on March 15 of 1918 in Vishki. Before the Second World War she lived in Riga at Lacplesa Street 56, apt. 29. On June 29 of 1940 she was struck off the house register, not stated where.

 

*a widow Haja Usdin, nèe Maimin, born in 1860 in Vishki (we suppose that she was Haja-Sora Usdin, wife of Schlioma Usdin, and mother-in-law of Haja-Merka).
Since February 11 of 1941 Haja-Merka Usdin, nèe Golandsky was registered as living in Riga at Lacplesa Street 56, apt. 29. There is a note in the house register dated October 1 of 1941 that she moved to Katolu Street 7, apt. 64 (territory of Riga ghetto during Nazi occupation).


Perhaps it will be interesting for you to know that there are Latvian passports of Schliom Usdin, Debora Usdin, Libov Usdin and Schula Usdin with their photos for 1920–1930’s.

*a widow Hena-Dweira Usdin, born in 1870 in Vishki (according to the birth records of the Jewish community in Vishki for 1904 Hena-Dweira, daughter of Idel Dumes was a wife of Haim-David, son of Kadisch Usdin),


*her daughter Sora Gorosch, nèe Usdin, born in 1896 in Vishki,
her husband Elia-Mendel Gorosch(tinsmith), born on September 25 of 1891 in Rezekne,


their children:
-daughter Haja Gorosch, born on April 25 of 1925 in Vishki,


-daughter Mirjam Gorosch, born on May 17 of 1927 in Vishki,


-daughter Doba Gorosch, born on June 13 of 1929 in Vishki,


-daughter Lea Gorosch, born on August 18 of 1932 in Vishki.

Perhaps it will be interesting for you to know that the birth records of the Jewish community in Dvinsk for 1898, 1899, 1903 and the family lists of the Jewish families belonging to Rezekne, set up in 1898 and subsequently supplemented, contain the following information:

*Judascha (Dascha), daughter of Kusiel, nèe Alterman was born in ca 1880 (aged 30 in 1910).


Her husband Rezekne petty bourgeois Abram, son of Itzik Miransky, born in ca 1865 (aged 33 in ca 1898).


They had children:
-son Itzik Miransky, born on August 18 of 1895 (the birth records of the Jewish communities in Rezekne and Dvinsk for 1895 do not contain information on his birth),

-son David Miransky, born on February 17 of 1899 in Dvinsk,


-daughter Hasia-Feiga Miransky, born in 1900 9aged 10 in 1910),


-daughter Scheina Miransky, born in ca 1901 (aged 9 in 1910),


- twins – daughter Basschewa Miransky, born on November 8 of 1903 in Dvinsk,


- daughter Michla Miransky, born on November 8 of 1903 in Dvinsk.

 

*Visky petty bourgeois Leiba, son of Kusiel (Kasriel in the birth records for 1890)

 

Alterman and his wife Sora-Iska, daughter of Salman, nèe Seltzer, had children:


- son Gerschon-David Alterman, born on June 16 of 1890 in Dvinsk,


- daughter Dweira Alterman, born on May 14 of 1898 in Dvinsk.
